Difficulty Level
This is an adventurous trip. It is very fun, but it is definitely a trip where you are exposed to the elements.
Paddlers should be comfortable spending most of the day actively paddling in a kayak.
This trip is designed as a short itinerary adventurama packed with the best scenery, the best wildlife, and the best glacier viewing a kayaker could ever want.
Evening Prior: We invite you to a pre-trip evening meeting at the Liquid Adventures Kayak shop in the small boat harbor. You’ll meet your trip leader and fellow paddlers and we will briefly discuss logistics and answer any last minute questions.
Day 1: We will set out on the water taxi for a scenic 2-hour wildlife charter to spectacular Aialik Bay. On the way we’ll keep an eye out for puffins, sea otters, Stellar Sea Lion haul outs and of course any of our resident humpback and orca whales. Once at our camp, your guide will give an introductory kayak lesson and go over essential safety procedures. The afternoon starts off with a paddle to a calving tide water glacier, navigating floating ice and soaking in one of the most awe inspiring landscapes in the world. Holgate arm is a rugged, heavily glaciated and mountainous arm of Aialik fjord that is full of wildlife and surprises everywhere you look. After a tasty dinner, you may choose to relax with a glass of wine or push off for a quiet evening paddle.
Day 2: After a night listening to the glacier calve, we wake to a hardy breakfast and a stretch. We’ll then load up the kayaks and head to Quicksand Cove. Along the way we’ll paddle past rock outcroppings and sea arches, watch puffins and cormorants fly and dive around us, and look up and down the mountain gullies for black bears. The secluded cove boasts a long beautiful sandy beach backed by spruce forests and ringed by glacier-covered peaks. This little oasis is packed with wildlife of bald eagles perched in the trees and salmon rushing up the river mouth to a small tidal lake behind the sand bar. It is not uncommon to spot multiple black bears foraging and paying us little attention. After a late lunch, our charter boat will return to take us back to Seward for hot showers, maxed out memory cards and stories of an amazing adventure.
Included in Price: Kayaking Equipment, Tents, Meals, Water Taxi Transfers, Guide Services, Permits and Park User Fees. Taxes and gratuity are additional.
We also offer a guided rental option for those who wish to have just the kayaks and guide. Ask us for pricing for guided rentals.
**Please keep in mind that this is a sample itinerary and may change depending on the weather, tides and individual paddling ability, but the highlights will remain the same**
